September 2009, during a session of the UN General Assembly, President Toribiong declared the waters of Palau the world’s first “shark sanctuary”.
Since then President Toribiong has been a strong advocate for shark finning bans across the Pacific and around the world. By setting an example and by taking a strong stance against shark finning, he has inspired other leaders to consider establishment of sanctuaries.
His convictions are best described in his own words during his addresses to the United Nations. (see links below)
“September 2010, President Toribiong and President Lobo Sosa of Honduras signed a Joint Declaration calling on other nations to stop unsustainable shark fishing.”
